Yamuna Water Sharing
Haryana, Rajasthan ready to form panel

Within days of writing to the Prime Minister to resolve the water-sharing issue with Punjab, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot held a meeting with Haryana CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda to discuss the issue of Yamuna water sharing here today.

The two states have reached a consensus to constitute a committee comprising irrigation secretaries of both states to discuss the issue of Yamuna water sharing.

The meeting between the two CMs was held at the secretariat. The discussed issues relating to bringing Ravi-Beas water from the Bhakra main line canal in Rajasthan, Hansi-Butana link canal in Haryana and to provide Yamuna water to various districts of Rajasthan for drinking and irrigation purposes.

Gehlot and Hooda reached a consensus on most of the issues. Senior officials of both states were also present during the meeting. It was decided that a committee would be constituted to discuss various issues related to water sharing. After discussing these issues, the committee would submit its report. However, no time frame has been fixed for the same.

The issue to smuggling of foreign liquor was also raised by Rajasthan during the meeting. Officials said the liquor smuggling was causing heavy revenue loss to the state. The state government expected that Haryana would exchange information to check liquor smuggling. Hooda assured Gehlot that proper action would be taken to check the menace. A decision was also reached to organise timely meetings of officials of both states to discuss the issue.

Haryana Irrigation Minister Capt Ajay Singh Yadav and Rajasthan Water Resource Minister Mahipal Maderna were also present at the meeting.
