Education policy The
Yashpal Committee on educational reforms and the plans announced by the new HRD Minister, Kapil Sibal, have aroused nation-wide interest among parents, educationists and policy-makers. The intended reforms are quite sweeping and, we find that already noted educationists, Members of Parliament and the political parties are expressing varied opinions. Some of the state governments, which are yet to study the reforms in detail, are also divided on the scope, range and direction of the reforms. Before Parliament and the union government discuss these reforms, we thought we should start a debate in The Tribune to let the academia, educationists and other commentators, who over the years have been talking about the need for such reforms, air their views through its columns. The debate starts on the Editorial Page in today's paper with an article under the title Marks and Quality by Harpal Singh. He is known to have been one of the people who have been pleading for reforms to make the education policy relevant to India of the 21st century. More articles on the Education Policy and Reforms will follow during the next few days.
