Guru’s birth  anniversary today:
The SGPC will celebrate the birth anniversary of Guru Hargobind, sixth Sikh Guru, at Gurdwara Bibeksar on Sunday. Manager of the Golden Temple Balbir Singh said arrangements for organising the event had been made.

Health check-up camp:
As part of its golden jubilee celebrations, the Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), Pipelines Division, in collaboration with the Sant Hazara Singh Club, Tungwali, organised a health check-up camp for children up to 10 years of age at Tungwali village here on Saturday.

New course at Adesh: The Faridkot-based Adesh Institute of Engineering and Technology has been granted permission to start B.Tech course in civil engineering. According to Dr H.S. Gill, chairman of the Adesh Foundation, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has allowed intake of 60 students annually for the course. In addition to this, the AICTE has also granted permission for M.Tech in computer science engineering and M.Tech in information technology with an annual intake of 18 seats each from this academic session.

Brar is Addl Advocate-Gen:
The state government on Friday appointed Harpreet Singh Brar as Additional Advocate-General of Punjab. Presently, he is also working as secretary of the Bar Council of Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh. He has become the youngest advocate to be appointed Additional Advocate-General of the state. In December 2007, Brar won the prestigious Bar Council elections of three states by securing maximum votes.

Gurdaspur
Monetary help for 5 families:
Manjeet Singh Dala, managing director of a real estate company, has given Rs 20,000 each to the families of five persons, who were killed on the unmanned railway crossing near Paniar village, 6 km from here, in the past one month. Residents of Paniar, who were agitated over the fact that the authorities concerned had failed to solve the problem of unmanned crossing, also organised bhog of Sri Akahnd Path Sahib for the peace of departed souls at the site of accident.

Hoshiarpur
Cash, gold stolen:
Some unidentified persons struck at a house of Harinderjit Singh of Krishna Colony, Dasuya, and decamped with Rs 70,000, 21 tola gold and other household articles on the intervening night of June 30 and July 1. The incident took place when Harinderjit along with his family had gone to Hoshiarpur. The police has registered a case under sections 457 and 380 of the IPC.

Exhibition inaugurated:
The Department of Fashion Designing of Kanya Maha Vidyalaya on Saturday inaugurated ‘Sukriti’, a two-day exhibition-cum-sale of exclusive hand printed dress material and other handicraft gift items at a local hotel here. Principal Atima Sharma said the money collected from the exhibition would be utilised for the funding of poor students. The institute has been providing free-of-cost training to rural women under the ‘Gandhian Studies’ to make them economically secure. Some of the items exhibited were made by rural women.

Davinder excels in BSc I exams:
The declaration of BSc I result was a matter of jubilation for Guru Nanak Girls College, Model Town. Davinder Kaur clinched the first position in the college with 77.7 per cent marks. Komal and Jaspreet Kaur bagged the second and the third positions with 76.5 per cent and 71.5 per cent marks, respectively.

Free health camp today:As part of its series of free in-hospital medical camps for the benefit of local residents, the DMCH will organise a free medical camp in the OPD block of the hospital from 9 am to 2 pm tomorrow. Consultants from specialties of medicine, pediatrics, skin, obstetrics and gynaecology, orthopaedics, eye, ENT and urology will examine patients during the camp.

Nominated:Anil Kumar, a national volleyball referee from Ludhiana, has been nominated for the upcoming FIVB 2009 Men’s Junior World Volleyball Championship to be held from July 31 to August 9 at Pune, Maharashtra. According to a communiqué received from K Murugan, secretary, Volleyball Federation of India, Anil has been asked to assist the federation.

Fight for life ends:
The girl, who had attempted suicide at the local police station on February 20, died on Wednesday after struggling for life since then. She had been booked along with her friend on the charges of moving under suspicious circumstances. She had tried to commit suicide in the police station by hanging herself from the fan with her ‘chunni’ in the retiring room of the station house officer.

MSc topper:
Dr Nav Inderjit Kaur Shetra daughter of Didar Singh Shetra, local correspondent of Punjabi Tribune, has bagged top position in MSc (Bio Technology) by securing 9.14 Commulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) in examination conducted by Lovely Professional University, Jalandhar.

Poem collection released: SSP Rakesh Aggarwal released ‘Haneran Jardian Laltena’ and Ujjaran De Vasi, collection of Punjabi poems, penned by Prahlad Atwal and Ani, respectively, here at a function organised by the Zila Sahitaya and Kala Manch on Saturday. ADC Harminder Singh, DPRO B.S. Balli, Mohinder Singh Dosanjh, Didar Shetra, among others also spoke. A kavi darbar was also organised.

CHAMBA
Encroachments on govt land:
The Chamba Welfare Association has openly come forward to the rescue of the heritage town of Chamba for its conservation and preservation and demanded removal of encroachments in and around the town. In separate memorandums to the Deputy Commissioner and Conservator of Forests, Chamba, the association has pinpointed specific points and places encroached upon by certain miscreants; adding that the illegal and unauthorised encroachments over the government land and forest land in and around the town as well as in the district were springing up day-by-day in violation to the Forest Conservation Act and the high court directives.

Anti-ragging panels: In order to root out ragging in letter and spirit in educational institutions, the state government has constituted ‘district-level anti-ragging committees’ for implementation of directions given by the SC in its recent judgment, which was related to the ragging incident of Aman Kachroo of Dr RP Government Medical College, Tanda. According to the notification, the committee would function under the Deputy Commissioner as its chairperson and Additional District Magistrate as its member secretary while principals of all government and private affiliated colleges would be its members.

KULLU
Gusheni-Tindar road:
Deputy Speaker Khimi Ram Sharma said Rs 1.91 crore had been earmarked for the 6-km Gusheni-Tindar road in the budget this year. The road would benefit about 1,000 villagers of Ropa, Dhingcha, Jhaniyar and Kaoochan. He said the government was committed to link all villages having population of 250 people. The road link to the interior areas of the state would not only benefit the people and their agricultural produce, but also generate scope for tourism, thereby enhancing employment opportunities.
