Traffic on the Chandigarh-Ambala highway remained stranded for over three hours when drivers of Haryana Roadways buses blocked the highway after one of their colleagues was reportedly beaten up at the toll plaza here this morning.

Low turnout at police recruitment
Chandigarh, July 7
The low turnout of the number of candidates appearing for the physical efficiency test (PET) conducted by the Chandigarh Police for 675 posts of constable for Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) indicate that the police is not an interesting proposition for the youths of Haryana and Punjab.

Bansal textiles evades tax worth crores

In a major operation to uncover the undeclared wealth, officials of the income tax department today conducted raids on more than 10 premises, including educational institutes and residential premises, of a well-known businessman, Bansal textiles, Sector 17, and related group at several places in Chandigarh, Panchkula, Shahbad and Ambala.

Edu dept website negates secy’s claims

Contrary to the claims of the education secretary, Chandigarh, Ram Niwas, that the level of the written test for recruiting regular teachers would be of Class X, the guidelines issued by the education department on its website today stated that the “difficulty level of the questions will be up to essential qualifications prescribed for the post.”

Drawing cue from the hunger strike of contractual teachers of the education department, the contractual teachers of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) are now crying foul over their non- eligibility in the forthcoming written test for posts of regular teachers due to criterion of increased minimum marks in B.Ed to 50 per cent.

No water supply

Police remand of highway robbers extended by two days
Chandigarh, July 7
A local court today sent two of the four highway robbers arrested by the UT police on June 30 to further two days of police custody. The court of JMIC Manisha Jain sent the accused, Jaipal Singh, kingpin of the gang, and Harinder Singh alias Tinnu, to police custody till July 10 in the robbery case involving Lalit Behl, a resident of Sector 33.

Negating the claims of constant vigil and discipline at hostels of Panjab University, three inmates of boys’ hostel No. 2, Vikas, Neeraj and Anurag, were arrested yesterday night for drinking and creating nuisance there.

Juvenile held for theft
Chandigarh, July 7
A juvenile was caught red-handed while committing a theft at a house in Dhanas. The police said a 17-year-old boy of Dhanas was allegedly caught red-handed by Suminder Singh, a resident of the same locality, while stealing Rs 500 from his residence last night. The accused has been arrested.

Abhishek beats Sahil, enters quarterfinal
Mohali, July 7
Abhishek Verma of Punjab gave a one-sided defeat to Sahil Sehwag of Delhi 4-2, 4-2 in the second round of under-14 category to enter the quarterfinal of the ongoing Manav Mangal AITA Total Tennis Talent Series at Manav Smart School, Phase 10, here, today.
In the boys’ under-12 category, top seed Ishaque Eqbal of West Bengal booked a berth in the quarterfinals after defeating Teg Bir Singh Hara from Punjab in three well fought sets by 4-1, 2-4, 4-2 in one hour 30 minutes. Ishaque will now face unseeded Sahil Sehwag of Haryana. Sahil beat Surya Prasad of Karnataka in straight sets by 4-2, 4-0 in 35 minutes.
