Abohar
30 students selected under fee waiver scheme
: Thirty students have been selected on merit basis for admission to the Abohar Polytechnic College here under the 'fee waiver scheme' as per instructions received from the state government, principal, Iqbal Singh Romana, informed on Thursday. Tehsildar Avtar Singh Makkar was present as nominee of the deputy commissioner to monitor the selection process. Chairman Sanjeev Middha said the AICTE had given permission to the college for admissions to the civil and electrical engineering courses.

Schools remain open
: Even when the deputy commissioner Ferozepur vide letter dated July 8, 2009, had ordered that summer vacations in all the government and private schools should be extended till July 12, as the mercury continued to soar in the region, many private schools in the villages of the sub-division were found to be functioning on Thursday during a survey.

Results today
: The results of BBA (I), BSc (IT)-III, bachelor of food science and technology (IV) and PG diploma in cosmetology conducted by Guru Nanak Dev University in April 2009 would be declared tomorrow, said Dr R.K. Bedi, professor in charge (examinations).

2 held under Copyright Act:
Two persons were arrested under the Copyright Act by Hanumangarh town police. The police working on a tip-off intercepted the youths and recovered 310 DVDs, 350 pirated CDs and 40 blue CDs from Deepak of ward 12 and Manoj Gosain of ward 11, sources said.

Man kills wife: A retired constable of the Rajasthan Armed Constabulary (RAC) allegedly killed his wife using a sharp-edged weapon at village Mehrasar Tijara and fled after the crime, sources in the Hanumangarh police said. As per the information, Bhanwar Singh, 60-year, had strained relations with his wife Anoop Kanwar (55) for the last few months. On Thursday, at about 3.30 am, he allegedly attacked his wife, who was sleeping, repeatedly using a sharp-edged weapon. The police said a case under section 302 of the IPC has been registered against Bhanwar Singh on the statement of Khiwa Singh.

Sugarfed accounts officer dead
: Rajeshwar Kaushal, grandson of former Dyal Singh Majithia College trustee FC Kaushal and son of chairman of the Government Pensioners Welfare Association BR Kaushal, died of kidney failure on Wednesday. He was 47 years of age. An employee of Punjab Sugarfed, he was working as accounts officer at sugar mills, Nawanshahr. His cremation was largely attended. The religious rites would take place on July 14 at Durga Mata Mandir, Urban Estate, Dugri, Phase-I, Ludhiana.

Baljinder wins women title: Baljinder K Mangat carded a nett 74 score to clinch the gold, silver and bronze division title in the Kingfisher Ladies Golf Monthly Round on the par-72 greens of the Chandigarh Golf Club here today. Baljinder was just one stroke better than Deepu Dhanoa, who finished second at three over 75 (nett) and another two strokes behind at 77 was Ashu B Singh.

Elected: Rajinder Singh and Lalit Kumar were elected president and general secretary, respectively, during the general elections of the employees’ union of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation today. The election was conducted under the supervision of RP Yadav who was appointed as observer for the employees union election.

1 held for forgery
: The police on Thursday booked Kamal, a resident of Sahlavas village, for allegedly duping several villagers of thousands of rupees in the name of getting the yellow ration card made and the bank loan cleared. The sarpanch of Bahu village had lodged a complaint with the police that Kamal had deceived several residents of the village for getting their various works done. After preliminary investigations, the police registered a case against Kamal and arrested him. Later, he was produced before the court, which sent him in judicial custody.

Biker killed: A person was killed and another sustained injuries when the motorcycle they were riding on collided with a parked tractor-trolley between Khanpur and Bahu village here on Wednesday night. The deceased has been identified as Vinod, a resident of Bahu village. Both were taken to the Civil Hospital here, where Vinod succumbed to his injuries while Ramavatar was referred to the PGIMS, Rohtak.

Rs 4.80 lakh looted
: Some miscreants reportedly stole Rs 4.80 lakh from a car parked outside the AXIS bank branch on the Kaithal-Ambala road here on Thursday. The thieves broke the windowpane and took away the cash lying in polythene on the front seat. According to Ramesh, a resident of Nauch village, near here, he had brought the cash from his village and kept it wrapped in a polythene. The incident took place when he went to a nearby shop to have a cup of tea with his friend.

Last date extended
: The last date for submission of application forms for various courses in the Institute of Mass Communication and Media Technology of Kurukshetra University has been extended from July 10 to 14. Stating this here on Thursday, Dr Rajbir Singh, professor of the institute, said the decision would benefit those students of BA (final year mass communication) whose results were declared late.

Bid to rape
: A farm labourer, Raju of Moradabad district of Uttar Pradesh and presently employed at Pooran Singh’s farmhouse at Guriani village here, allegedly made a bid to rape an eight-year-old girl at Pooran Singh’s farmhouse on Wednesday. However, when Raju’s wife abruptly came into the room, he let the victim go. The girl’s mother made a complaint, following which the police registered a case of attempt to rape against Raju. The police also got the victim medically examined.

2 held with poppy
: Excise and Taxation Department officials seized 25 quintals of poppy from a truck and arrested two persons at Lakhanpur on Thursday. Sources said during a routine checking at Lakhanpur toll post, the officials seized the contraband packed in 37 gunny bags and hidden beneath a plywood consignment. The truck was on its way from Budgam in the valley to deliver the consignment to a conduit in Delhi. Truck driver Fareed Ahmed of Budgam district and co-driver Imtiaz Ahmed of Banihal were taken into custody.

Malla gets theatre fellowship: The Union Ministry of Culture has awarded a senior fellowship to theatre personality Vijay Malla for his contribution towards promotion of stage plays. Malla, president of the Ek Sath Rang Mandal, has been associated with theatre for the past 35 years. He has written, directed and acted in several stage plays. He has also been awarded the best director and actor awards by the J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages.

Jawan killed: An Army jawan was killed and three were injured when a tree fell on their vehicle in the Nowshera -Kalal area, said the police. An Army truck was going from Nayee post to Kalak border post when a tree fell on it last night, killing Naik Chanderkanta, a native of Karnataka, on the spot, besides injuring three others, including Sub Bapo Swaroop, Hav Bojan Rao and sepoy J Patil. The injured personnel have been hospitalised.

Guard booked
: The police on Wednesday booked a security guard of the Central Building Research Institute, Fateh Bahadur Pun, who is reported to have fled after duping residents of Rs 70 lakh. Rajbir Singh Jalan, a resident Durga Colony, where Pun stayed with his family, alleged that he had duped 50 persons through ‘Chit Fund’.
