Mumbai, July 20
Mohammad Ajmal Amir, alias Kasab, the lone terrorist involved in the terror attack on November 26 last year to be taken alive, confessed to his role before an open court here today.

As soon as the proceedings of the court started this morning with deposition of a witness, Kasab told judge ML Tahilyani that he wanted to consult his counsel Abbas Kazmi. After a short discussion, Kasab said he wanted to make a full confession before the court. “Sir, I want to make a confession... I plead guilty...,” Kasab told the court in Urdu.

Special Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam objected saying the accused could not make a confession. However, the judge overruled the objections and asked Kasab to proceed with his confession.

The 21-year-old accused went on to tell the court that he was a Pakistani national and a member of the Lashkar-e-Toiba. Kasab went on to provide a detailed description of his arrival into India from Pakistan by sea along with nine other terrorists. He went on to provide a detailed description of his own participation in the attack especially at the Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus railway station and the Cama Hospital where he along with Abu Ismail shot dead several passengers. Ismail was killed by the police while Kasab was caught alive.

Kasab also provided details as to the bomb he placed in a taxi, which exploded at Mazgaon in South Central Mumbai.

Among Kasab’s revelations include names of several Pakistani members of the LeT like Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi, Abu Hamza, Abu Jindal and Abu Kafa. He revealed that these people actually saw off Kasab and his associates when they boarded a ship at Karachi that would bring them to Mumbai.

The group moved to four different boats including the fishing boat Kuber as they sailed to Mumbai from Karachi. Kasab also revealed that he was in regular contact with Hamza over the mobile phone and how detailed instructions were given to the terrorist group.

Among the details provided by Kasab was how he and his associate Abu Ismail, who entered the CST station, went to a public toilet and fixed a timer to one of the bombs they had with them.

Kasab also provided details about the shootout that claimed the lives of Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) chief Hemant Karkare, Additional Commissioner of Police Ashok Kamte and Inspector Vijay Salaskar. He described the sequence of events when the police officers arrived at the hospital and how Kasab and Ismail killed them. The terrorist also described how he then grabbed the police vehicle and drove on before being intercepted.

After Kasab made his confesson, Special Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam reacted by welcoming the development. “This is a victory of truth,” Nikam said.

Maharshtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan reacted by calling for the trial to be wrapped up quickly. “All those involved in the 26/11 attacks should be hanged so that the victims get justice,” Chavan said.
