New Delhi, October 30
Following reports that they were being given without proper verification, the Union government today decided to ban pre-paid mobile phone connections in Jammu and Kashmir from Sunday.
Likely to affect over 38 lakh subscribers in the state, the Centre cited security reasons behind the decision. The Union Home Ministry, in a release, mentioned that even the existing pre-paid SIM cards would not be renewed from November 1 onwards.
And for implementation of the decision, the Ministry has asked the Department of Telecommunications to take appropriate action in the matter. The release mentioned that the decision had been taken following reports that service providers and vendors were not doing proper verification of customers before providing the pre-paid connections.
In some cases, a single person had been issued with a multiple number of connections.
