Rashly driven school bus overturns

An overspeeding school bus, carrying more than 28 students and two faculty members of Sacred Heart Convent School Jagraon, overturned while negotiating a sharp turn near Sohian village on the Ludhiana-Ferozepur highway this afternoon.

Two elderly woman stabbed, one dead

Rishi Nagar is becoming unsafe for elderly women. Recently, a woman was stabbed to death by her nephew and robbers stabbed another 80-year-old of the same locality after entering her house.

Residents can now bet on horse racing

The city will finally have something to be proud of with the Punjab government going ahead with an ambitious project to set up a race course on 150 acres of land belonging to the animal husbandry department. With an eye to generate additional revenue the cash strapped government plans to rake in money by introducing horse racing, a popular form of gambling, in the state’s industrial hub.

With drain-cleaning machine lying defunct, Jagraon chokes

A vehicle fitted with a machine for cleaning the drains of the city is lying unattended in the local municipal council’s office since long. The vehicle and the machine, which was purchased by the Jagraon Municipal Council two years ago, are not in a working condition.

The statue of Flt Lt Nirmaljit Singh Sekhon, the first Indian Air Force officer to be awarded the Param Vir Chakra, was relocated to a place near the deputy commissioner's office in the city’s mini secretariat on Saturday.

Congress councillor hand in glove with land mafia, alleges resident

A resident of the city has accused a Congress councillor of helping land mafia in trying to illegally encroach upon a piece of land owned by an NRI in the Mahal Bagat area near Salem Tabri. The complainant, Dr Rajeev Hora, has alleged that the land in question is owned by one of his partners who lives in Canada.

The Rotary Club, Ludhiana Greater, today launched a door-to-door campaign in Ram Nagar area of Jamalpur to prevent spread of dengue. Nearly 1,000 houses were visited by three teams led by Dr Arvinder S Nagpal, Dr Rajanbir S Thind and Dr Sanjeev Uppal.

An inter-house puppet show was organised in Green Land Convent School, Dugri, here today. Students from Classes VI to X participated in the competition. The old and forgotten art of puppetry was brought alive by students through storiesof Panchtantra and other moral stories that inculcate values in children.

Death of a 48-year-old man, whose mutilated body was found from a railway track near Guru Teg Bahadur Nagar in Khanna yesterday, is shrouded in mystery. Though, the Government Railway Police (GRP), Khanna, is yet to register a case, family members of the deceased have alleged that the man was murdered and his body thrown on the railway track to make it appear as an accident.

Three employees of private security agency arrested

Three employees of a private security agency, who had been moving in a SUV with a green beacon atop and frightening residents by wearing Army uniform, were arrested yesterday.
