Your
fitness is in your hand — literally. Whether you want to track your activity level or need help in your nutritional requirements, all you need to do is to press a few keys on your mobile and the solutions will pop up like magic! From talking to friends to taking pictures, the smartphone is also helping people keep in shape. There are a number of apps that show you the right way of being fit, track your diet and regulate your weight and motivate you to work out every day. But with so many apps floating around is it may be a difficult task to select the right ones for your overall fitness. The good news is that so far some of the best apps are free and can be downloaded in seconds.
Making exercise fun
There are several other apps that double up as your dietician and your fitness trainer. MyFitnessPal, for example, is a great calorie counter and exercise tracker for the smartphone. All you have to do is to log your daily diet on the mobile. It calculates calories and suggests the amount — and kind of foods — you should eat for a healthy weight. Though the Fitbit app does what Fitocracy and MyFitnessPal and, for that matter, most other fitness apps do — counting your calories, keeping a record of your exercise regimen and charting how much weight you have lost, it scores over others by recording your heart rate, glucose levels, blood pressure and sleep patterns. In case there is a problem area then it begins managing your weight by suggesting ways to go on a healthy diet and overseeing your exercise regimen.
Pumping iron
Fleetly is an app developed for those gym rats who can’t work out in isolation. This is the right app to bring a little friendly competition back into your active lifestyle. Earn points, join virtual teams and compete in challenges, all the while tracking your progress. Now in its fourth version, it remains one of the best apps for social workouts and features great data trackers.
Challenging routine
Yogic help
Omvana is a recently launched meditation app by Mindvalley. It features a growing library of vocal tracks (guided meditation, inspiring speeches and narrated exercises) and ambient music (relaxation and sleeping audios and soothing tunes) by the world’s leading wellness, spirituality and inspirational figures. These tracks and audios can be purchased and downloaded from Omvana’s built-in store. But Omvana’s most unique feature is its mixing board, which allows users to easily mix and combine a vocal track, guided meditation or speech with an instrumental song. It provides a customisable interface to allow users to create their personal “zen” moment on their iPhones. This app can be downloaded free. It has some pre-loaded free tracks. Paid tracks start from $0.99 (Rs 55) and goes unto $ 7.99 (Rs 479).
Motivational experience
Spotify assumes importance in the list of fitness apps because of its adrenalin-pumping music. It is not a fitness app but it can put you in the mood for a vigorous workout. Spotify offers the widest selection of free music for an amazing work-out. You can listen to music in several languages as its selection runs into millions. “I tried all kinds of exercise and diet control plans but nothing worked,” says Delhi-based consultant Paromita Bose. “Finally, I downloaded two fitness apps and that changed my life forever. My aim is to lose 10 kg in a year. In the first month itself I have shed two kg. These apps are nothing short of a miracle.” Miracle they are, but then, miracles only happen if you are ready to put in body-breaking hard work. Miracles only work that way!

Wrist ‘watch’ Twenty
six-year-old Samira was all set for her wedding. Preparations for the big day were in full swing. She had finalised her wardrobe and matching jewellery. The only thing that remained to be bought was a beautiful watch that would adorn her wrist on the D-Day. She had kept aside a hefty sum for it as she planned to buy a high-end luxury watch. Ask her about her addiction for time-keeping devices, she says, she feels incomplete when she steps out of the house without a watch. And, what better time to go in for a luxury watch than her wedding.
Similarly, 38-year-old Varun finds it hard to understand how people can do without a good watch. Among other things, his wardrobe essentials include a TAG Heuer chronograph. A few years back, many would have scoffed at the idea of spending so much money on a luxury watch. A price in five figures for a watch was unthinkable and definitely out of question. After all, watches are merely tools to keep track of time, a feature that even the simplest of cell phones is equipped with today. Till a few years back, cell phones actually seemed to have sounded the death knell of the wristwatch industry, with obituaries being written for it. However, the good old wristwatch has made a comeback, no longer as an accessory but a statement of luxury and taste. From being traditional gifts for birthdays and retirement, these watches have become stand-alone jewellery pieces. While most women buying fine watches want to make a style statement, men often like to bequeath these as family heirlooms. Many factors have propelled the growth of this industry. Some of these include the emergence of a strong middle class and an increasing number of high net-worth individuals. A greater spending power among the youth today, besides exposure to popular global brands due to increased international travel, has boosted the sales. A recent study by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham) has revealed that the market size of the Indian watch industry, which is currently estimated at Rs 5,000 crore, will be worth Rs 15,000 crore by 2020. According to D.S. Rawat, Secretary-General of Assocham, the Indian watch market, which is being driven by youth and premium segment of consumers, is growing at 15 per cent every year. It is set to become more than double over the next five to seven years, he adds. The Indian watch industry remained dominated by public sector undertakings like Hindustan Machine Tools Ltd (HMT) and Allwyn for long. Private players like Titan and Ajanta ruled this market till about the 1990s. All this while, international luxury watches were imported into our country. To cater to the growing demand of fashion and luxury watch consumers, many international brands entered the Indian market. From merely four to five high-end brands during the 1990s, today there are a number of international players giving tough competition to local Indian watch brands. According to Yashovardhan Saboo, CEO of Ethos Limited, “International watch brands are looking at Indian markets with a renewed interest. They are trying to capture the price-sensitive Indian markets. For this, they are even keeping the prices low as compared to international markets.” Presently, the Indian market has been flooded with a range of watches by global giants like Rolex, Omega, Rado, Vacheron Constantin, Montblanc, Swatch, Citizen, Seiko, etc. that come at various price brackets. However, more than 65 per cent of the watch market is dominated by male buyers. According to Vinod Arora of Packard’s, an authorised dealer for Rado watches, “As far as female buyers are concerned, the sale of high-end watches have not really picked up as much as expected. This is because women prefer to buy jewellery instead of spending the same amount on a watch. Of course, women are slowly opening up to the jewellery segment in watches.” Another watch segment that is showing immense potential is that of children’s watches. Whatever be the case, international watch brands are all out to explore and capture these hitherto untapped markets. In the process, the customer, too, gets the benefit of choice. It can be safely assumed that watches are here to stay. The market for those who treasure high-quality timepieces is certainly increasing by the day. Gadgets may rule the markets but the charm of the good old wristwatch will endure.

Jewellery has fascinated women over the centuries. Initially, pocket watches were adapted to be worn on the wrist. The trend of wearing watches as jewellery pieces on the wrist began during the late 19th century. Pierre Jaquet-Droz and Jean-Frédéric Leschot are said to have given the first design for a wristwatch in the 1790s when they attached a watch to a bracelet. It was, however, Swiss watchmaker Patek Philippe, who is credited with having designed a wristwatch in the form we know it today in 1868 for the Countess Koscowicz of Hungary. The first wristwatch for men was designed by Louis Cartier in 1904. However, it was only during World War I that wristwatches for men started being manufactured at a large scale for German soldiers by Swiss watchmaker Girard-Perregaux. Despite their practical use, wristwatches were considered ladies’ fashion for a long time. It was during the later part of the 20th century that wristwatches became a wardrobe essential for both men as well as women. |

The alchemy of food She quit a corporate job to set up a venture to bake healthy cakes. Chaitali believes that cakes can be wholesome and nutritious Mriganka Dadwal For
37-year-old Bangalore-based baker-entrepreneur Chaitali Raizada, nobody could be a better brand ambassador than the lady herself. Chaitali, who is on a mission to provide “nutritious-yet-delicious” food in a “junked-out-world,” looks not a day above 25. Her brand Taantra is providing home-baked, organic, vegan cakes and muffins. An MBA, she had to quit her day job in an IT company to meet the ever-growing orders. Targeted to cater to children, pregnant moms, and “souls who treat their body like a temple and not a junkyard,” these cakes come with 100 per cent oil- free and gluten-free tag. “I absolutely do not use maida and sugar in my baking. These are multi-grain and jaggery-based cakes and muffins,” she emphasises, adding that her “Aromatic orange almond cake is absolutely loved” by her women clientele. On what inspired her to start baking, Chaitali recounts how merrily she did baking as a child. The hobby transitioned into a profession after her daughter Aanya was born. “Taantra came into existence due to my nine-year-old daughter as I wanted to inculcate a valuable lesson of healthy mind, body and soul early on in life. Once Aanya was born, my hobby became my saviour to feed her just the right stuff”. Her friends pushed her to start this venture. She dug into her savings, invested a couple of lakhs towards the inventory and Taantraa was born. “Nothing has been raised from the market,” says the proud woman entrepreneur. She is dishing out “not less than 50 muffins and a couple of cakes everyday” from her kitchen. The venture is two years old and its popularity has grown beyond Bangalore. She accepts orders for cakes from all over the country and one has to place them at least 48 hours in advance. The menu card in the Taantra kitchen – Hot Season King Mango, Pumpkin Cinderella Carriage, Aromatic Orange Almond, Rabbity Carrot, and Very Very Strawberry — looks like a page straight from Fairyland. Pumpkin in a cake, you ask her and pat comes the reply “Replacing traditional cake ingredients with healthier options like pumpkin or moong dal is actually my inspiration as this is what we grew up eating,” she adds that she is the first one in the world to bake moong dal cake which came into existence due to the fact that she wanted to feed her daughter “proteins from a vegetarian source”. She is a firm believer that small kids recognize good food over bad food. One would think that being made from pure ingredients, organic cakes or muffins might be expensive but brand Taantra is dispelling such myths. The 250 gm multigrain cakes are priced at Rs 350, 250gm almond flour cakes are priced at Rs 450 and multigrain muffins are priced at Rs 60. Kathak and painting keep her grounded. She believes that Bangalore is her soul city. “My father is an Army officer, so we kept moving to various parts of India but now I am settled in Bangalore for the last six years and this feels like homecoming.” She does not even use microwave, non-stick pans in her preparations, almost making it sound like a holy ritual. Chaitali says, “During ancient times, baking was associated with birthing. Taantra and baking, as I see it, are both alchemical processes and hence the name.”
