SC: Lt Gen Suhag can take over as Army Chief

The Supreme Court today cleared the way for Lt General Dalbir Singh Suhag to take over as the Army Chief on August 1 by refusing to stay his appointment. He will succeed General Bikram Singh.

SC says Shariat courts have no legal sanction 
New Delhi, July 7
The Supreme Court today rejected a PIL for a ban on Shariat courts and 'fatwas' issued by them, but ruled that these had no legal or constitutional sanction and as a consequence, no order issued by any such religious body could be enforced or was binding on anybody.

SC gets 3 new judges
New Delhi, July 7
Justices Arun Mishra, Adarsh Kumar Goel and Rohinton Nariman today assumed office as Supreme Court judges, taking the number of judges to 27 against the sanctioned strength of 31, including the Chief Justice of India. Justice Goel has been the Chief Justice (CJ) of the Orissa High Court, while Justice Mishra was the CJ of the Calcutta HC.
