A day after the police arrested four persons for allegedly appearing on behalf of others during an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam, seven more such arrests, including girls, were made here yesterday. Later, they were released on bail.

The accused have been identified as Harmanpreet Singh of Chawinda Khurd, Upkar Singh of Amar Dass Avenue, Jagdish Singh of Model Town, Jalandhar, Ranbir Singh of Gaggu Buaha village, Tarn Taran, Gaurav of Paleenwad village in Pilibhit (UP), Pawandeep Singh of RB Estate, Loharkan road, and Sahira of Katra Karam Singh. A case under Sections 419 and 420 of the IPC has been registered against them on the complaint of Manoj Singh, who was conducting the exams. Further probe was on, the police said.

“This is not a mere co-incidence. All of them can’t be the relatives of those on whose behalf they were appearing for IELTS exam, risking their own career. There could be some monetary aspect associated with this episode,” said an official of the Punjab Police intelligence.

It has raised many eyebrows, indicating towards the involvement of some racket behind this. It also points towards the desperation among youth to settle abroad for greener pastures. The youth, especially living in the rural belt, are taking every possible means to clear the test.

In September 2016, a similar case had come to light when a special task force (constituted to nail gangsters) stumbled upon an IELTS racket and arrested four persons who were providing answer keys to the candidates for Rs 30,000 to Rs 40,000 each. The police had got a tip-off that a gangster, Manga, had checked into a local hotel. But before the police raid, he had managed to flee. However, his four accomplices — Navi, Judgebir Singh, Sandeep Singh and Simar Singh — were arrested. On questioning, it was found that Manga ran an IELTS racket. He reportedly worked for the Davinder Bambiha gang, who has been killed in a police encounter.
