Amritsar, March 19

A few days after the Congress assumed charge in the state, instances of political vendetta are on the rise.

SAD general secretary Bikram Majithia today appealed to Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh to rein in rogue elements in the Congress in Majitha who were disrespecting people’s verdict and indulging in violence against Dalits. He said this while addressing a press conference here.

Cong workers beat SAD supporters

At Majitha, SAD supporters were allegedly beaten up by a group of Congress workers who damaged their autos and household items yesterday.

Even after a lapse of 24 hours, no FIR was lodged and no action was initiated by the police, he alleged.

Meanwhile, SSP (Rural) J Elanchezhian said: “My team visited the spot yesterday. The personnel concerned were told to register an FIR after recording the statements. We have no reservations and will go by the law.”

Manjit Kaur, Dalit councillor from the Majitha Ward No 1 and a daily labourer, alleged that “the Congress was baffled by the fact that a majority of people from our community supported Bikram Majithia in the Assembly poll.”

She alleged that all municipal council workers were being pressured to quit. Some of the accused had been identified as Balwinder Singh Binder, Rinku and Manjit Singh Kaka.

“Congress workers led a murderous attack on me and my family leaving my eight-year-old son Amritpal and two other relatives Paramjit and Kulwinder injured. Paramjit has been admitted to a hospital, but the police had not bothered to record his statement,” she said.

They sought intervention of Majithia, who approached the SSP (rural), but action in the matter was awaited.

Majithia said the incident had sent across a message that Dalits were not safe from vendetta by Congress workers. He claimed that all MC councillors in Majitha were being pressured to resign.

“The brutality of the attack can be gauged from the fact that a Dalit’s house was ransacked and her mini-carrier was damaged. This is nothing but frustration of the Congress. Even Rahul Gandhi who came to Majitha for the first time to campaign had failed to garner votes for his party candidate who lost by a margin of over 20,000 votes. I asked Capt Amarinder Singh to get his workers learn how to honour the people’s mandate, get a case registered against the guilty and compensate the loss suffered by the victims,” he said.
