One track approach

 

Pleasantly single… this holds true for most of the well-known, newly-known or hardly known singers in Punjabi music industry. This year was the year of ‘singles’, well not of bachelors if you are thinking, it was a year when just about every singer released their single track!

 

You heard us right, this year the trend of releasing a single track than a complete album ruled the roost. Whether it was the popular Roshan Prince or the young A Kay, everyone had a single to their claim. The release is then naturally followed up with youtube hits, which every singer tried to achieve in the best way. 

 

If you can buy this, then here is it, year 2014 apart from being a good year of Punjabi music, also saw the launch of more than 20 new singers, who made their debut, but of course with a single. This year surprisingly, singer actors like Roshan Prince or Jassi Gill who were busy with their films, came home to their passion, singing. Punjabi music scene also witnessed the sameness of themes of songs. So, just about every singer sang about either Ford, or about Scooter or Ferrari. On the other hand, almost every second song, Tommy Likhain Neyfey tey (Jassi Gill), Rakho Tommy Shommy pa key (Ammy Virk). Tommy just got popular in Punjab. 

 

If this wasn’t it, Punjabi singers this year have gone all out to get their music videos done in the best possible way. The best videographers, technicians were roped in for videos. And well, they were not just videos, 2014 was the year of videos with a storyline. If Virsa Arts won accolades for creating singer Hardy Sandhu’s Soch, others followed suit to as well. Every second song had a story, so much so that it looked like; we were watching a short film. There is no harm in it, as long as it was good. But towards the end, the stories of videos also got repetitive, reaching saturation point, so much so that we cried to watch a plain song which is a song and not a film. 

 

If on one hand stories in videos caught fire, this year was largely divide to two halves, one half dedicated to romantic tracks like Soch, Ek Saal, Dil Nu, Photo (Gippy Grewal), Veham (Roshan Prince), Judaa 2 (Amrinder Gill), the other half had songs with an attitude- So you had Patiala peg from Diljit Dosanjh, Mitran De Boot from Jazzy B, Saadi Waari Aan De (Ranjit Bawa), Ammy Virk’s Jattizm, Dilpreet Dhillon’s Gunday No 1. Amidst all this were songs that portrayed the innocence of Jatt, songs like Lakkdi Da Ford, Cycle (Sarthi K), Dad Vs Son, Date (Ammy Virk) were a couple of desi songs. Where on one hand, many new music companies were launched, some other like Speed Records went on to make more than 150 songs this year making Dinesh Auluck a sought out figure in the Punjabi music industry. What also was seen prominently this year, was the absence of Yo Yo Honey Singh on the Punjabi music front. This talented rapper moved base to Mumbai leaving Punjabi music industry, let’s hope not for good. So, in his absence, we had a dozen rappers crooning rap in every third song. It was a fairly happening year for the Punjabi music industry and only hopes to better with time… that is if the actor singers decide to give their time to singing, and the new ones decide to stick to singing rather than making way for Pollywood!
