A holy ‘bir’ of Guru Granth Sahib, was burnt after a fire due to a short-circuit inside Gurdwara Raja Ram at Ram Dwali village falling under the Kathunangal police station here today.
The incident came to light during the wee hours when the granthi of gurdwara noticed smoke emanating from the small room of the gurdwara where Guru Granth Sahib was enshrined. Villagers assembled at the gurdwara and the police was called in.
SHO Kathunangal police station Daljit Singh said it was an accidental fire and not an act of mischief.
The SHO said the bir was placed in a small room under a reclining fan fixed on the side wall. The granthi left gurdwara at around 8 pm as per routine when everything was in order, he added. He said the fan caught fire due to short-circuit in an unmanned room. As its stand got melted, the fan fell on the bir leaving it burnt.
The forensic team reached the spot and took the burnt pages of the bir in its possession, he added.
