10 held for trying to claim cops’ lives

AMRITSAR: The Ajnala police have arrested 10 persons for trying to run a tractor over a police team in Manjmian village on Wednesday.

The Ajnala police have arrested 10 persons for trying to run a tractor over a police team in Manjmian village on Wednesday. Led by Ajnala SHO Paramvir Singh, the police party had gone to the village to hand over the possession of a disputed land to one Ramesh Kumar on the orders of a court.

Ramesh had won the legal battle for the possession of around 36 acres of land in Punjab and Haryana High Court recently.

The SHO alleged that they had gone to the village for evicting the property following the orders of the additional sessions judge. He said that when they went to the spot, a tractor being driven by Gurdeep Singh of Mattian village along with Uttam Singh and his son Jagbir Singh tried to run into the police team. The cops had jump aside to save themselves. The accused were also accompanied by Harpal Singh, Shamsher Singh, Ramanpreet Singh, Harmanbir Singh, Manpreet Singh, Vikram Singh, Mandeep Singh and Mohan Singh. They were said to be armed.

Earlier too a heavy police force was mobilised for evicting the people residing at the said land. According to Ramesh, he won the legal battle for the land following which the district administration and the rural police were directed to get the land evicted from encroachers and give possession to him this year.

However, the people residing on the land claimed that they had been residing there since the country got Independence. They maintained that they had lost the legal battle only because they couldn’t present their side properly in the court.
