Amritsar: Gambling reaches a high as the festival of Diwali draws nearer. Yesterday, the police raided a gambling den, being operating from a hotel. The CIA staff confiscated Rs 1.75 lakh from the spot and arrested as many as 21 persons, including the manager of the hotel, identified as Samit Tejpal. They were later released on bail. Similarly, the police also arrested eight persons in two separate instances for gambling. They were also released on bail. TNS

Exhibition of handicrafts 

An exhibition of handicrafts prepared by inmates of Pingalwara was organised here on Wednesday. Jute bags, toys, bed sheets and covers, candles, drawings and paintings were displayed at the exhibition. Dr Inderjit Kaur from Pingalwara said the children work on these handicrafts at the rehabilitation centre during their free time. She said Pingalwara endeavours to inculcate livelihood earning skills to their inmates so that they could live an independent and dignified life. She urged the residents to visit the exhibition and encourage the children. TNS

Green Diwali celebrations 

The Pehal government resource centre organised an event to celebrate green Diwali with special children here on Wednesday. MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla was the chief guest on the occasion. Dharminder Singh Gill, a teacher, said the special children participated enthusiastically in the event. He said they urged society to celebrate pollution-free Diwali. TNS

Cellphone recovered 

Tarn Taran: The Sub-jail, Patti, authorities have recovered a cellphone, Samsung, from a jail inmate. The accused has been identified as Pargat Singh, a resident of Ghadduwala village, Makhu. The Patti police have registered a case under Section 52-A of the Prison Act in this regard. OC
