Amritsar, June 16

The health wing of the Municipal Corporation (MC) caught more than 30 stray pigs from posh localities, including Ranjit Avenue, Rani Ka Bagh and Company Garden on Saturday. A team of the health wing, led by Municipal Health Officer (MHO) Dr Raju Chowan, also got arrested a pig farmer who is said to have been habitual of letting loose his swines in the nearby localities.

Identified as Charanjit Singh of Navi Abadi, he was handed over to the Ranjit Avenue police station.

Residents had been complaining of swine menace. They say pigs in large numbers roam about in the streets and vacant plots, creating a nuisance for them. Apart from scattering garbage from dumps, the swines sometimes attack children.

MHO Dr Raju Chowan said, “We have been getting complaints of swines roaming in markets and gardens of the city. We took along a team of professional pig catchers and captured 30 pigs from Ranjit Avenue, Rani Ka Bagh, Company Bagh and Jahajgarh. Theses pigs belonged to people involved in pig farming. They leave the animals in the streets instead of providing them feed in their enclosure.”

He said a formal complaint had been registered against such farmers.

It is worth mentioning here that stray pigs can be seen roaming in various localities especially around railway tracks. Residents of Inderpuri have been raising their voice for long against it. Despite the efforts of the MC, the pigs can bee seen roaming in streets of Inderpuri. Not only in slums, stray animals can be seen in posh localities as well.
