Following directions of the district sessions judge, the city police have booked around 33 government officials, including policemen, in connection with the custodial death of a jail inmate, Raju Chand.
Additional Director General of Police (Crime) Iqbal Singh Sahota is looking after the investigations while DIG (border range) will assist him in the case.
Police Commissioner Jatinder Singh Aulakh confirmed that the case was registered following the directions of district and session judge to ADGP (crime) and investigations were being conducted by higher police officials.
The police have booked 32 government officials posted at the local Central Jail and related departments for their role in the custodial death of Raju, who died in 2013.
Her mother, Manjit Kaur, filed a writ petition in the Punjab and Haryana High Court alleging that Raju died due to inhuman torture in the jail by the police.
Among those booked include superintendent, jail, BS Bhullar, superintendent Amrik Singh, assistant superintendent, jail, Gurbinder Singh, assistant superintendent Tasvir Singh, assistant superintendent Jagtar Singh, medical officer Dr Gunam Singh and naib tehsildar Harvinder Singh.
The police yesterday registered a case under Sections 302, 304-A, 148, 149 and 120-B of the IPC in this regard.
