The Amritsar Central Jail authorities confiscated six mobile phones from a Nihang Sikh, who had returned to the jail after completing his parole term. The accused has been identified as Harjit Singh, convicted in a murder case. He has been serving jail term for over a decade.

Arshdeep Singh Gill, Superintendent, Amritsar Central Jail, said the jail staff deputed at the entry gate got suspicious over the huge size of turban. While undergoing metal detector check, the machine indicated presence of some metal in his turban.

“Initially, he didn’t allow the jail staff to frisk him and tried to give the matter a different colour by raising a hue and cry,” said Gill.

He said four of the seized mobiles were smart phones. “Such inmates are a nuisance. We work hard to curb the practice of sneaking in prohibited material but such incidents continue to occur,” he added.

Preliminary investigation revealed that he was to sell these cell phones to other jail inmates who could pay him heftily. He said a complaint had been submitted to the Gate Hakima police for further action.

Rs41,000 seized

Meanwhile, jail officials seized around Rs 41,000 in cash from a jail inmate. The recovery was made during a search operation. The accused has been identified as Amarjit Singh, a Kapurthala resident. He told the jail authorities that the cash was given to him by his family members when he had gone for a court hearing. The jail authorities said that they had reported the matter to the police for further investigation
