Banker booked for embezzlement

TARN TARAN: A bank deputy manager has been booked in connection with a fraud case.

A bank deputy manager has been booked in connection with a fraud case. Identified as Brijpal, who had been posted in a local branch of the State Bank of India (SBI), he is said to have embezzled Rs 19.62 lakh. Five others have also been booked for assisting the accused.

Besides Brijpal, other accused have been identified as Hardeep Singh, Harnek Singh, Gurinder Singh, residents of the town, Amrik Singh of Chutala village and Darshan Singh of Plasaur village. The bank has placed Brijpal under suspension.

The police said Brijpal had been posted here from October 2015 to June 2016. In violation of the prescribed norms of the bank, the accused created several accounts of agriculture and gold loan and Kisan Credit Cards of the other accused. He sanctioned and disbursed them loans to the tune of Rs 19.62 lakh.

When Chief Manager Deepak Kumar, during his routine inspection, stumbled upon the fraud, he informed the police for action. The police said that an embezzlement of Rs 19.62 lakh had been detected. No gold has been found in the record that should have been taken for granting the loans. Rules have been violated for other loans as well, the police added.

The accused are absconding, said investigating officer Gurmeet Singh.

The police told here today that the accused have been booked under section 420, 120-B IPC.
