A Batala family has accused the police of inaction in a case in which several persons allegedly tried to grab its piece of agricultural land in Batala. The owner of the land, Balwinder Singh of Naseerpur village, consumed pesticide to end his life when the opposite group along with a revenue official turned up for demarcation. The incident occurred on June 14.

He was rushed to a hospital where he underwent treatment. Later, a case was registered against the family for allegedly obstructing the discharge of duty by a government servant. They alleged that the case was lodged to pressurise them.

Nirmaljit Kaur, wife of Balwinder Singh, later filed a complaint with the police. She said the accused was a cop who had been harassing the family to grab the land. She said that she had to send her wards abroad fearing their implication in false cases.

Harkrishan Singh, SHO, Rangar Nangal police station in Batala, said the matter was under investigation. He said a naib tehsildar had got the case registered.
