Amritsar, December 18

The residents of Bhagtanwala have once again come out in the streets to lodge their protest after the Municipal Corporation proposed to dump garbage at either of the two designated sites with the help of the police. The MC is finding it difficult to clear garbage from the localities in the city.

With no other alternative at hand, authorities are considering dumping of waste at Bhagtanwala or Fatahpur. These sites have been designated by the high court.

The residents of Bhagtanwala, supported by CPS Inderbir Bolaria and those of Fatahpur, led by BJP national seretary Tarun Chugh, are once again up in arms against the MC’s move to dump the garbage in their vicinity.

The MC has approached the offices of the Deputy Commissioner and Police Commissioner for seeking police assistance to resist the residents’ from holding protests.

After yesterday’s developments, Bhagtanwala residents staged a protest at Kot Mangal Singh Chowk today, under the banner of Sanjhi Sangarsh Committee.

Sanjay Sharma, a resident, said, “All rules are made keeping in mind the public interest. How far will it be justified to put thousands of lives under danger by complying the court orders. Dumping of garbage or installing processing plant near the residential localities will turn the place into hell.”

Naresh Chawla, president of the Sangarsh Committee, said the residents had full faith in CPS Inderbir Bolaria. The Chief Minister has assured that our locality will never be used as dumping ground. If the MC is contemplating to dump garbage here, then we will intensify the agitation.”

Jai Inder Singh, another protester, said the residents of Bhagtanwala had been suffering from ill health due to dumping of waste in their locality for the last 22 years. He said, “Many people are suffering from serious chest infections and respiratory diseases. The administration should set up a medical camp here for the residents.”
