The city-based business community is mourning the demise of their leader Amrit Lal Jain (76).

Jain passed away while attending a programme at Malerkotla yesterday. He was vice-president of the All India Beopar Mandal and head of the Punjab Chapter of the organisation.

Due to his close association with Congress leaders, the Punjab Pradesh Beopar Mandal was dubbed as pressure group of the Congress Party against the government by the Opposition.

He along with his fellow businessmen had constituted the Beopar Mandal in 1961. Jain became its president in 1991.

He was a known face among the business community of the state. He was a leader of traders for the past four decades. Jain remained at the front to take up the cause of the trading class with the government and eloquently presented their case on the table.

Jain passed his Matriculation from BK High School, Ghee Mandi. He vividly remembered his teachers, who shaped his life. He finished his MA (economics) from Hindu College.

Jain lobbied enthusiastically against the new excise laws and norms being framed by the government. The business community feels that his death has left a void, which will be difficult to fill.
