Amritsar, June 21

International Yoga Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm in the city on Thursday. Around 1,500 residents performed yoga at Guru Nanak Stadium. A number of government officials from various departments took part in the event.

Speaking at the occasion, Police Commissioner SS Srivastav said, “Yoga keep diseases at bay."

Inmates at the Central Jail too marked the day. Besides, the Yoga Day was also observed at educational institutes.

Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) organised a special event in which students, teachers and non-teaching staff from the university actively participated. The event was marked by the presence of Sandeep Kumar, president, Bhartiya Yog Sansthan, Amritsar (West), who has been practicing yoga for the past 10 years. Students and staff of DAV Public School performed yoga on their campus.

Keeping up with the theme of the Yoga Day — Yoga for Peace — students and teachers of various schools performed different yoga asanas. The NCC and NSS units and sports wing of BBK DAV College for Women observed the day. The event was graced by Subedar Major KP Tiwari from NCC and Sarla Rani, a yoga practitioner.

Over 250 participants from Mai Bhago Government Polytechnic College for Girls, Bhavan's SL Public School, Amritsar, Khalsa Public School, Amritsar and Government School, Mall Road were taught yoga Asanas by Sarla Rani.

Around 500 students and faculty members participated in the Yoga Day function held at DAV International School, the instructor demonstrated various asanas and informed the participants about their benefits.

A large numbers of students and teachers of Spring Dale Senior School performed yoga. Students of Police DAV Public School, Amritsar, Shri Ram Ashram Public School, Madhav Vidya Niketan Senior Secondary School along with other schools.

An hour-long programme was held on the Amritsar College of Engineering and Technology premises in which 300 people took part. Participants of all age groups participated in the event with great enthusiasm. Khalsa College for Women and other institution under Khalsa College Governing Council also took part in Yoga Day festivities.

A district-level function was organised at the local Janta Palace in which Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Sandeep Rishi was the chief guest. The participants performed different yoga asanas under the guidance of the yoga experts. The 87th battalion of the BSF under the guidance of Commandant Rakesh Razdan celebrated the day at border township Amarkot, 35 km from here, in which 150 persons participated and practiced yoga asanas.

BJP workers, under the guidance of district president Jaswant Singh Padda, participated in the yoga camp and practiced yoga asanas

The NCC unit of the SGAD College, Khadur Sahib also organised yoga day in which Kuldeep Singh Aulakh and other prominent personalities participated.
