A nursing student of the International College of Nursing has filed a complaint with the Tarn Taran Deputy Commissioner against the college authorities for manhandling her on Tuesday as she refused to pay her fee.

The complaint was filed by advocate Sandeep Gorsi on behalf of Sumeesh Sharma on Wednesday. Talking to The Tribune, Sumeesh said, “The college had asked me to submit Rs 40,000 or otherwise I would not be allowed to sit in exams.”

The complainant said she had already deposited Rs 15,000 with the college after which she was allowed to take two exams. Sumeesh added that she had third exam yesterday, but the college authorities asked her to first deposit the fee.

Sumeesh said  she requested the staff to allow her to take the exam as her absence would ruin her future. She alleged that a staff member slapped her.

As Sumeesh’s father lives in a foreign country and he could not pay the fee, she had borrowed money from Gorsi for the purpose.

Gorsi said, “I have no relations with the family. The girl and her family lives in our street and she has asked for help. Even I asked the college management to allow her to take the exam. I had promised them to pay the dues from my pocket.”

It was unlawful to manhandle any student for not paying the fee, he added.

“On one hand our government has initiated the Beti Bachao, Beti Padao campaign while on the other, a poor student is manhandled just because she is requesting the college management to let her sit in the exams,” Gorsi said while adding that he would fight a legal battle for the student free of cost and ensure that she gets justice.

He said, “She has already missed her one exam. The college should have supported her when I had promised to pay the fee. But instead, they were adamant.”

“I have also forwarded a complaint to Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh,” he added. Gorsi said a case should be registered against the administration and staff of the college. The college chairman, RP Singh, said, “The college had issued roll number to the student and as such nobody could refrain her from taking the exam.”
