Sukhcharan Singh, a retired assistant labour commissioner, today accused a cop of allegedly thrashing his employee and taking away Rs 70,000 from his petrol pump in Lopoke yesterday. The incident has been captured in a CCTV camera. He said though a complaint was filed with the Lopoke police, no case had been registered so far.

Sukhcharan said the cop, Sukhbir Singh, is posted at the Kot Khalsa police post. “The cop, accompanied by several other persons, including Ginder Singh, Bhola Singh and Jora Singh, thrashed Tarlok Singh Rana, one of my employees. Rana has sustained injuries,” he said.

The incident occurred at around 11 am yesterday. Rana was taken to a government hospital in Lopoke, following which he was referred to the Civil Hospital, Amritsar. Though the SHO came to the spot but he left without any investigation or verifying the facts, he complained. He alleged that the Lopoke police were sheltering the accused.

According to Sukhcharan, the accused also made some casteist remark. The cop has the backing of an MLA, he claimed. He said the matter was brought into the knowledge of SSP (Rural) Parampal Singh. He also demanded action against the police officials who were “delaying action to benefit the accused”.

Meanwhile, the SSP said he had directed the SHO to take appropriate action. He refuted the charges of sheltering the accused. He said the investigation was under progress and the police were verifying whether or not the cash was taken away. He said the incident was a result of some monetary dispute over petrol purchase and the procedure was underway to file a case against the accused.
