Amritsar, March 22

Although the Congress’ win in the Punjab Assembly elections has pleased party supporters, city residents are annoyed with large- scale defacement of major and minor stretches in the city. Senior party leaders and ground-level workers have installed different size hoardings at prominent chowks and roads. They have not even spared streets.

Party workers have conveyed their wishes to their leaders by defacing city with posters. So far, the Municipal Corporation (MC) has failed to check the menace. It seems that there is competition among party activists to please their newly elected candidates and the high command.

After taking charge as Minister for the Local Bodies Department, Navjot Singh Sidhu visited the city first time today. A large number of second-rung leaders of the Congress installed hoardings from airport to Golden Temple to welcome and congratulate Sidhu.

Heera Singh, a resident of the Majitha road, said, “I am Congress supporter and happy with my party’s win, but the way second- rung leaders and workers are defacing the city is condemnable.”

Rajinder Singh, a resident of Court Road said, “Earlier, the SAD-BJP leaders were defacing the city with hoardings. Now, the Congress is following in their footsteps.”

He said, “Captain Amarinder Singh-led Congress government has shunned the VIP culture. Now, I want that the ruling dispensation must bring reforms against defacement.”

Shruti, a resident of the walled city, said “The Congress government should act impartially and instruct the MC office to take strict action against irresponsible leaders.” She said Congress leaders and activists must maintain sanctity of the holy city.
