The district administration in association with the volunteers of Kar Seva sect, Khadur Sahib, started a tree plantation drive to beautify the Doburji-Jandiala stretch here on Wednesday.

The plan is to plant 2,500 flowering trees, such as amaltass (cassia fistula), gulmohar (delonix regia), neeli gulmohar (jacarnda acutifolia) and flame of forest (butea monosperma).

The Kar Seva sect, under the leadership of noted environmentalist Padma Shri Baba Sewa Singh, has prepared saplings at its nursery in Khadur Sahib. The sect stated that it has already beautified around 382-km roads by planting around 3.5 lakh saplings.

Speaking on the occasion, Baba Sewa Singh said, “Planting a sapling is easy but what is crucial is taking its care. Volunteers of the sect will ensure that all trees survive.”

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Kamaldeep Singh Sangha and Lok Sabha member Gurjit Singh Aujla were also present on the occasion. Aujla said that the role of Baba Sewa Singh in environment and education sector is commendable. In an appeal to the general public, Aujla said people should come forward to take care of the plant saplings planted near their residences.

According to Aujla, he held discussions with other religious groups to work for the cause.

The Deputy Commissionersaid, “Within a few years, the journey from Doburji to Jandiala will be anybody’s delight as flowering trees will dot both sides of the road. Such efforts will be made on other roads too.”

Meanwhile, Chief Khalsa Diwan president Dr Santokh Singh said volunteers of the schools, being run by them, will actively participate in taking care of the saplings.
