Ex-sarpanch booked for not handing over record

AMRITSAR: A former sarpanch of Aawan village near Ramdas, Gurcharanjit Singh Raju, was booked for not handing over the record to gram panchayat after his tenure.

A former sarpanch of Aawan village near Ramdas, Gurcharanjit Singh Raju, was booked for not handing over the record to gram panchayat after his tenure. A few villagers procured the information under the Right to Information Act in this regard. After an inquiry conducted by senior police officials the Ramdas police registered a case against the accused.

In his complaint, block development panchyat officer (BDPO), Ajnala, stated to the police that former sarpanch Gurcharanjit Singh Raju di not submit record of panchayat to the present incumbent.

The local police was reportedly not acting against the accused as he was associated with SAD. Villagers also approached the court in this connection.

A local resident, Sukhmanpreet Singh, alleged that accused had received a grant of Rs 23 lakh during his tenure. He did not use the funds and misplaced the record, he added.

Nirmal Singh, SHO, Ramdas police station, said, “We have registered a case under Section 408 of the IPC (Criminal breach of trust).

He said, “No arrest has been made so far. We are conducting raids to arrest the accused.”
