The Beas Police have booked Jagbir Singh and his father Ajmer Singh of Karimpur in Uttar Pradesh for allegedly duping Gurbaj Singh, a resident of Sathiala.



The Beas Police have booked Jagbir Singh and his father Ajmer Singh of Karimpur in Uttar Pradesh for allegedly duping Gurbaj Singh, a resident of Sathiala. The accused took Rs 7 lakh from him to send him abroad. The case was registered following the investigations by the economic offence wing. The incident occurred in November 2015. No arrested has been made so far.

Punbus strike postponed 

Amritsar: Over 4,000 members of the Punjab Roadways Punbus Contract Workers Union on Thursday postponed their strike after some of their demands were accepted.  As per the announced schedule, members of the union were to disrupt the plying of private buses on inter-district routes on Wednesday. District president of the union Tejinder Singh said the strike was called off at the eleventh hour after senior officials of the Punjab Roadways accepted some of the demands and assured of looking into the rest next week. He added that in case the officials do not honour their promise, they would hold a strike again on June 23. Punjab Roadways accepted the union’s demand to reinstate 400 conductors and drivers, who were blacklisted for the misuse of diesel, he said. These employees belong to different categories like regular, contractual and others. The Roadways officials also decided to release arrears of about Rs 2 crore to the employees. On the demand of the union to place at least two members at the depots, the officials agreed to appoint only one. He said the union members would watch the interests of the field staff like conductors and drivers. tns

Seminar on hypertension

Amritsar: A district-level seminar to create awareness about high blood pressure was organised at sub-divisional Civil Hospital, Baba Bakala, on Thursday. Speaking on the occasion, medical experts made participants aware about the symptoms and precautions required to avoid the problem. Presiding over the event, Civil Surgeon Dr Pardeep Chawla said high blood pressure and hypertension were silent killers and in the absence of awareness about the problem, many people lose their lives. Deputy Medical Commissioner Dr Prabhdeep Kaur said faulty lifestyle adopted by people was a major reason behind hypertension or high blood pressure. She said along with balanced diet, one should also adopt a daily exercise routine. Medical experts Dr Tarsem and Dr Sahibjit Singh exhorted people to go for regular checkup at government facilities to avoid complications. tns

Man booked for illegal mining

Sandeep Singh of Ghumrah village was arrested by the Ramdas Police for alleged illegal excavation of sand. He was nabbed by the mining department when he was taking sand in a truck PB-06-E -2441. He could not produce any documents regarding the vehicle and the excavated sand.

Jail inmate jumps parole

The Rajasansi Police have registered a case against Gurpreet Singh of Uthia village for jumping parole. He had come out of jail on April 5 for six-week parole. He was to report back on May 18. However, he didn’t return.

Creative workshop

The management of the Punjab State War Heroes' Memorial and Museum (PSWHMM) at Sham Singh Attariwala Chowk, Attari Road, has taken an initiative to conduct creative workshops for from June 20 to 30. Experts from the National Museum, New Delhi, have been invited to conduct these workshops for students at the complex. PSWHMM general manager Col HP Singh (retd) said the workshops would be conducted on various themes related with the concept and philosophy of the memorial. Activities will be conducted in Roman and modern calligraphy, artwork, clay, paper craft and treasure hunt. Apart from this, activities related with war heritage art work displayed in galleries of the memorial will also be practised. “Children while they are on summer vacation are invited to participate in these activities to ignite their hidden creative skills at a very nominal registration fee,” he said.
