Students of Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) and farmer activists of the Revolutionary Marxist Party of India (RMPI) staged a protest outside the campus over the proposed hike in hostel and tuition fee for students on Wednesday.

A former president of the GNDU Students’ Union and state president of RMPI, Rattan Singh Randhawa, said the university was planning to increase fee for various courses. He claimed that the university was planning to increase the fee of a few courses from Rs 3 lakh to Rs 10 lakh.

“A student has to deposit a fine of Rs 25,000 if he or she fails to deposit the fee in time. A student not depositing fee in time indicates that he or she is facing a financial crisis. The educational institutions should not be there to make money but help deserving and poor student,” said Randhawa.

RMPI Central Committee member Gurnam Singh Daud said, “Most of the educational institutions are already being run by business-minded and politically connected people. It is disheartening that a university on the name of Guru Nanak is planning a fee hike.”
