Amritsar, February 11

The pedestrian paths near Shera Wala Gate are being misused by drivers to take a U-turn even as the area witnesses heavy rush of pedestrians due to its proximity to the Golden Temple. As one moves from Gheo Mandi to Shera Wala Gate, the road has designated pedestrian paths near the roundabout to help residents cross the road.

The roads near the Golden Temple see a rush of pedestrians as many park their vehicles at far off places and move on foot to avoid traffic jams. The commuters say the rights of the pedestrians need to be protected.

The violation of basic traffic rules is one of the major causes for traffic chaos in the city. In the absence of any check on the movement of wrong-side driving and misuse of available road infrastructure, traffic snarls are witnessed near Shera Wala Gate throughout the day.

Balram Kumar, a local resident, said, “It seems the city has no place for pedestrians. This is evident from the use of footpaths by vehicle drivers and parking of vehicles. The pedestrian paths have been constructed to help people cross roads safely.” He said drivers violating the rights of pedestrians should be dealt with strictly.

The residents say the traffic police should start a special drive in areas where traffic jams are witnessed frequently. Residents said challans should be issued to drivers who do not follow traffic rules.

Joginder Singh, a shopkeeper, said, “The area has many commercial establishments and as such the movement of goods carriers is high here. Sometimes, these vehicles are parked without leaving any space for the movment of the traffic.” He said illegal parking of vehicles on roadsides was one of the major reasons behind traffic congestion in the city.
