Amritsar, February 20
A delegation from Stuttgart, a major agriculture centre in Germany, visited the Khalsa College campus and interacted with faculty and students of the Agriculture Department. The delegation, headed by Ditmar Hillist, an agriculturist and expert from International Wine Institute, Stuttgart, was briefed on farms and practices by the experts on campus.
The team sought information about agriculture-related technology and organic farming related practices that are now part of the college curriculum. “They also visited the dairy farms. The delegation had many faculty members and students of agriculture,” said Principal Dr Mehal Singh.
He said the delegation was facilitated by Khalsa College Governing Council joint secretary Gunbir Singh. Agriculture Department Head Prof Randeep Kaur Bal and bio-control lab incharge RP Singh apprised the delegates about the crops, fruits and vegetables grown in the college. The college uses vermi-composting and also has hydroponic nurseries in its farms that the delegation keenly observed.
In their interaction with the students and faculty, the delegates briefed them about German agriculture, which is spearheading the sustainable farming concept in European Union. Germany is one of the biggest producers of wheat, barley, rye and wines. Viniculture is an important part of their agriculture.
