Heritage experts want Bhai Veer Singh’s well to be preserved

Though the state government has spent crores of rupees to beautify the surrounding areas of the Golden Temple and renovate heritage sites, a large number of heritage monuments have been crying for attention.

A historical well belongs to Padma Vibhushan awardee and eminent poet Bhai Veer Singh near his ancestral home has been crying for attention.

Bhai Veer Singh, who is known as father of modern Punjabi poetry, was born on December 5, 1872, at Devi Wali Gali in the walled city.

The family and neighbours of Bhai Ver Singh used to get water from the well, which is in a pathetic condition. Residents and heritage experts in the city want that the well to be preserved.

As per information, Bhai Veer Singh also mentioned about the well in some of his writings.

Dr Balwinder Singh, former head of the Guru Ramdas Planning Department, Guru Nanak Dev University, demanded that the well of Bhai Veer Singh should be preserved.

“There are several buildings and monuments which need attention of the government. The well of Bahi Veer Singh is one of such historical monuments. We should preserve it for our next generations .It will be a tribute to the great poet”, said Dr Balwinder

Residents have stopped using the well several decades ago. The well is lying in a pitiful condition.

Bhai Veer Singh shifted from Devi Wali Gali to the Lawrence Road area in 1930. The Lawrence Road is also named after Bahi Veer Singh and his house is converted into a museum.
