Mystery shrouds the death of a married woman. The deceased has been identified as Madhu, a resident of Marjipura area under the Islamabad police station.

After conducting a preliminary probe, the police have booked her in-laws and husband on the charge of abatement to suicide.

Deceased’s family members alleged that Madhu was killed by her husband and in-laws. They alleged the incident came to light when her in-laws were taking the deceased’s body to the cremation ground after her death under mysterious circumstances.

However, one of their relatives saw them rushing towards the cremation ground, they alleged. The family said the deceased’s in-laws left her body midway and fled the scene.

Deceased’s brother Arjun, who works as a driver, said his parents informed him about her death over phone. He said Madhu was married to Sandeep Kumar of Marjipura area around six years ago. The couple had two children — Reet (5) and Lakshman (1.5).

Mamta, a resident of Jalandhr, who is the maternal aunt of the deceased, said, “Madhu had gone to Amritsar for some work. She used to tell her parents about harassment by her in-laws. Yesterday too, she had informed her family that she was assaulted by the accused. In the morning, they came to know about Madhu’s death. Her In-laws did not inform the family about her death.”

A relative of the deceased said Madhu had strangulation marks on her body. (ACP) Narinder Singh and SHO Islamabad police station Iqbal Singh reached the spot and started investigations.

The SHO said a case under Sections 306, 148, 149 and 201 of the IPC was registered against deceased’s husband Sandeep; brother Deepu; cousins Karan and Rishi; father-in-laws Ashok Kumar; mother-in-laws Seemawati and grandmother Leelawati.

He said the cause of death could be ascertained only after receiving the report of the postmortem examination. The SHO added that raids were on to arrest the accused.
