Intermittent showers lead to dip in mercury in region

AMRITSAR: Intermittent showers in the region during the past 24 hours have resulted in a decrease in the temperature. After the showers, the change in the weather drove people to put on warm clothes.

Intermittent showers in the region during the past 24 hours have resulted in a decrease in the temperature. After the showers, the change in the weather drove people to put on warm clothes.

The mild showers began on Tuesday late evening and it continued throughout the night and even in some parts till the evening.

Agriculture officials said though the ripening and harvesting of wheat crop was expected to start within next 20 days, the mild showers were good for the crop.

Chief Agricultural Officer Dr Dalbir Singh Chinna said, “The dip in the temperature will help an increase in the weight and size of grain. It will ultimately have a positive impact on the yield.” Chinna said reports of flattening of crops in certain areas had also received, but the crop on the corners of the field and those under trees had been flattened. The damage could be said negligible, he added.

Agriculture officials said the showers were good for vegetable crops and fodder crops.
