Dr Sasko Kedev, interventional cardiologist, Republic of Macedonia, performed a complex heart surgery on patients suffering from 100 per cent heart blockage at Fortis hospital here today.

Dr Arun Chopra, director cardiology at Fortis Hospital, said three patients were suffering with total blockage of heart artery, especially the left artery. They were operated upon with a new angioplasty technique, he added.

Chopra said earlier such patients had to be treated with bypass surgery but now could be treated successfully with newer angioplasty techniques allowing for faster recovery and early discharge.

Dr Sasko Kedev said, “Cardiac catheterization by the radial approach uses the arm artery to access the heart as opposed to traditional leg or femoral artery which makes it possible to treat blockage in arteries.”

The radial approach is used to treat such high risk patients with Chronic Total Occlusion (CTO) and it is highly successful and safe. A patient can resume normal life after a few days, he said.

Dr Kedev also demonstrated the technique of antegrade and retrograde stenting to open the blocked artieres through a non-invasive technique.
