The Amritsar rural police have arrested a person identified as Sukhpartap Singh, a resident of Jandiala, who allegedly tried to run over a police team during a naka in Jandiala.

The police charged him with attempt to murder and under other sections of the Indian Penal Code. The police have registered a case under Sections 307, 353, 186, 272, 337 and 427, IPC, against him following the statement of head constable Sarabjit Singh.

He stated to the police that he along with ASI Surinder Mohan and head constable Amarjit Singh had put up a naka near the Ghaah mandi in Jandiala and were checking vehicles. He said a car bearing registration number PB-02-AM-7363 came from the Dharad village side and it was being driven in very rash manner. The police team signalled the driver to stop, but instead of stopping, the driver of the car tried to run over the police team. He said the police team moved away from the spot and had a narrow escape in the incident. Later, it was learnt that the car driver had hit several other vehicles before the incident.

Harjit Singh, investigating officer, said it was yet to ascertain the reason behind the incident. He said the accused seemed to be mentally upset due to some domestic reasons. Further investigations were under progress.
