Amritsar, January 19

The Municipal Commissioner (MC) today announced to restart its dog registration drive in the city. On the first day, the registration cell at Civil Veterinary Hospital at Hathi gate registered 35 dogs.

The civic body had started it six months ago but the dog registration cell had received a poor response from city residents. The registration process had almost stopped as hardly anyone turned up to get their pets registered.

Dr Kuljind Singh, Veterinary Officer of the MC, said, “The MC Commissioner was the first one to get her dog registered and gave a call to residents to follow suit.”

The civic body warned that challans would be issued to pet owners, who fail to register their dogs.

The drive had started for the registration of pets in the city on July 8 last year. The objective of the drive was to generate funds for the dog sterilisation campaign.

Earlier, the civic body had conducted a survey and found that there were 19,508 pet dogs and around 9,698 stray dogs in the city. The MC had been charging Rs 500 as an annual registration fee for one dog.

As per the directions, registration of pet dogs is compulsory in the areas falling under MC jurisdiction. The MC has planned to spend the money collected from the registration on dog sterilisation.
