Amritsar, February 28

Vistara Airlines will launch six-day a week Mumbai-Amritsar-Mumbai and Delhi-Amritsar-Delhi flights from March 8.

Airport director Venkateshwar Rao, confirming the development, said Indigo will also fly two flights Delhi-Amritsar-Delhi and Mumbai-Amritsar-Mumbai from March.

IndiGo has already announced to operate a daily non-stop flight between Amritsar and Delhi and Amritsar and Mumbai from March 16.

Sources at the airport stated that many airlines like Emirates, Turkish, Bulgaria and Air Asia have evinced interest and even conducted surveys.

A spate of flights were introduced at Sri Guru Ram Das Jee International Airport during the past two financial years.

A majority of these flights were international. Malaysia’s Malindo Air introduced Kuala Lumpur-Amritsar-Kuala Lumpur and Singapore’s Scoot Airway chipped in with Singapore-Amritsar-Singapore besides SpicJet introduced a Dubai-Amritsar-Dubai flight.

Already, Qatar Airways is operating a daily flight between Amritsar and Doha. Uzbekistan Airways is operating a flight between Amritsar and Tashkent. Turkmenistan Airlines is operating a daily flight between Amritsar and Ashgabat. Air India Express is operating a daily Amritsar-Dubai flight.

Airport officials are keenly awaiting the start of a flight between Abu Dhabi and Amritsar, which was announced by Jet Airways some months ago, but its final date is yet to be made public.

Venkateshwar Rao stated that a considerable hike in footfall of international passengers portended well for the Amritsar airport in the long run. He added that the airport would be listed in the category of a major airport of the country with its footfall reaching one and a half million this March 31.
