Third among her four sisters and a brother, Shenaaz became a breadwinner for her family in her early teens. Her soulful voice and her natural flair for poetry was her way of earning a living, until she got noticed by the patron of Punjab Natshala, Jatinder Brar. The folk singer, who aspires to be famous like many of her idols, is now the first girl to be adopted by Punjab Natshala, with all her professional training and studies to be taken care of by its patron, Brar.

Born with visual impairment, Shenaaz, an aspiring singer, is her family’s pride. Her parents Buta Ram, who is a rickshaw-puller, and Paramjit Kaur, a housewife, say that she was born with the gift of a melodious voice. “When she was very little, she used to sing at family gatherings and otherwise. She is very talented, but we never really thought about a singing career for her because of our limited resources,” said her father Buta Ram. But destiny had other plans, as the young singer was soon noticed by the Pehal resource centre, a school for disabled children. There she received her formal training in music and it was at one of their functions at Punjab Natshala that her performance touched Jatinder Brar’s heart.

“She has all the makings of an amazing artist and we at Natshala will do our best to hone her talent and give her a platform to shine. Her ailing mother and father’s limited income had never really given a chance but we will soon begin with her education as well as live performances,” said Brar.

As for Shenaaz, she is happy that her dreams can now come true.
