Amritsar, April 23

Navneet Kaur of Dashmesh Public Senior Secondary School, Mehta Chowk, has come out with flying colors in the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) provisional result declared on Monday. Grabbing the ninth rank in the state, she is among the top 10 girls of the state across all streams. She has scored 97.11%.

A Class XII science student, Kaur had also scored more than 90% in her matriculation examination of the same board.

Kaur hails from Dhardeo village in the district. Her father Gurmail Singh is a priest and mother Harjinder Kaur is a housewife. Talking about her good score, she said, “I have worked hard. It was the constant revision of the school work which made me learn the subject better.”

Navneet wants to study cardiology abroad. Harshdeep Singh, managing director of the school, said, “She is a hardworking girl. We had high hopes from her. She has done the city proud.”

Deputy DEO Rekha Mahajan said, “She is a state rank holder. It is a matter of proud.”

Chaos over delay

Though the PSEB Class XII result was expected to be out by afternoon, it was not available till late evening for the schools. It created an atmosphere of chaos in the city schools as school heads were seen inquiring about the results and expressed their astonishment over the delay.

“The result was available at 1 pm. Later, the webpage of the PSEB went unresponsive,” said Daljit Kaur, officiating principal of The Residential School for Meritorious Students in the city.

Mandeep Kaur, Principal of Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Mall Road, said, “We have been trying to access the result. There is no clarity. The school will get over in a few minutes and we don’t have result in our hands. ”

The board declared the result late in the evening.

Drop in pass percentage

There has been a drop in the pass percentage of the district. As compared to last year, the pass percentage of the district in the provisional result is only 50.78%. Last year, the pass percentage was 83.95 per cent in the district.

Most of the educationists in the city cited the new system as the reason behind the drop in the pass percentage. This year, the centres of the PSEB schools were changed on the lines of the CBSE schools. “This was expected. The change in the system will bring some affect. However, it is a good move if the menace of copying is controlled,” said Aman Sharma, a teacher of a government school.

Mangal Singh Tanda from the government teachers’ union said, “Students must be prepared in advance. They must have been in tension due to change in exam centres and far off centers.”

Teachers said they hoped the new policy would be beneficial in the long run.
