Amritsar, September 1

The police is yet to arrest the culprit, who had allegedly raped his minor niece, in the Kathunanagal area.

Investigating officer Asthar Masih said the accused was absconding since the registration of the case. She said raids were being conducted at his suspected hideouts to arrest him.

A 14-year-old girl was allegedly raped by her paternal uncle, identified as Gurmeet Singh.

The victim in her complaint lodged with the police alleged that her parents had gone to Amritsar on August 24 while she along with her grandmother and paternal uncle Gurmeet was at home.

Gurmeet, a bachelor, used to live with them, she added. She said at around 11 pm, she was sleeping in the varandah when the accused came to her bed and covered her mouth so that she could not shout for help. She alleged that he physically abused her and went back after threatening to kill her in case she told anybody about this. She alleged that on August 25 and 26, he repeatedly raped her. As the accused had threatened her of dire consequences, she did not tell her parents initially when they returned on August 27.

The Kathunangal police registered a case against the accused under Section 376, IPC, added with Section 8 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act 2012.
