Amritsar, November 14

Irked over the non-payment of salaries for the past over two months, employees of the Municipal Corporation (MC) staged a protest at the head office of the MC at Ranjit Avenue here today.

The employees raised slogans against senior officials of the MC and the Punjab Government during the protest. On a call given by the Sanjhi Sangharsh Committee led by Harjinder Singh Walia, a large number of employees gathered at the MC office and protested for over two hours.

While addressing employees, Harjinder Singh Walia, president, Sanjhi Sangharsh Committee, said if the MC officials did not release their salaries, they would again stage a protest tomorrow. The protest will continue till the Local Bodies Department released their salaries.

“We have not been getting salaries for the past two months. The salaries for September and October are pending. Now half of November is also gone. Navjot Singh Sidhu, Minister for Local Bodies, had assured us about the timely release of salaries, but he failed to fulfil his promises. The officials are not paying heed to our demand. Now, we don’t have any money to meet our day-to-day expenses,” said Walia.
