Keeping in view the water crisis in various parts of the country, the Municipal Corporation (MC) has planned to impose fine for water wastage.

MC Commissioner Sonali Giri has issued a notification, stating that if a household is found wasting water for the first time, he or she will have to pay Rs 1,000. If the same household repeats the offence, it will have to pay Rs 2,000. According to the MC, the water connection of habitual offenders (third offence) will be snapped and they will have to pay Rs 5,000 to get the reconnection.

She said the country had been facing a serious crisis of water due to which people have been migrating to other states. “At the same time, people here are apparently not concerned over the crisis as they can be seen washing cars and floor using water pipes. A car can be washed with a bucket of water. We have to use water with care. Otherwise we will face the same crisis in our city,” she stated.

The water supply and sewerage wing has conducted a meeting and constituted teams to check the violation. The MC Commissioner has asked the residents to irrigate their parks and plant in the evening to curb the wastage of water.

Not only residents, but also government departments, including the civic body offices, can be seen wasting water by not getting repaired the broken taps.
