A city-based artist Aruna Sharma has created replicas of the original paintings based on the life of first Sikh Guru that were displayed at the National Museum of London. Opening her exhibition of 25 paintings created in water colours at the Art Gallery on Friday, the artist said that it is her ode to the city.

Inaugurated by chief guest Neera Sharma, principal, DAV school, and sculpturist Shivdev Singh, the exhibition aims to acquaint the common man with the rare artwork. “Not every art lover can afford to travel to London to see the art work and these paintings. It’s an attempt to bring the paintings to them. It took me three years to complete 25 paintings out the original series of 57 paintings, made with natural colours,” said Aruna.

The inspiration for the paintings, she said, came from her early days as an amateur artist. “I was awarded a degree in 1989 and along with a book on art. The book had description of the paintings on the life of Guru Nanak Dev during Mughal period. The idea hit me instantly but it took me so long to implement it on canvas.”

Aruna plans to complete the series of 57 paintings in the time to come and travel with the exhibition to different cities. The exhibition will remain open till April 22.
