Tarn Taran: Dr Gurmeet Singh, vice-chancellor of the Central University of Puducherry, on Monday visited Sri Guru Angad Dev College, Khadur Sahib, a college being run under the patronage of Baba Sewa Singh (kaar sewa wale). During his visit, Dr Singh visited the computer lab, fashion designing lab, home science lab and chemistry lab. He appreciated the college management for conducting educational, cultural and sports activities in rural areas. He also visited Nishan-e-Sikhi and met Baba Sewa Singh. Child labourers rescued
Amritsar: The district administration on Monday rescued 16 children who were engaged in different occupations here. District Child Safety Officer Manpreet Kaur stated that the task force carried out searches at different locations in the city and rescued the children. She said a children home would be established soon in the city. TNS
Three booked for offering liquor without licence
Amritsar: The police have registered a case against Surinder Pal Singh, alias Shinda, a resident of Guru Nanak Nagar in Verka; Partap Singh, a resident of Himachal Pradesh; and Davinder Singh, a resident of Guru Nanak Nagar, for allegedly offering liquor to customers without a licence. According to the police, the accused used to run a non-veg eatery joint in the Verka area. The police said it was illegal to offer liquor without a licence. A case under various sections of the Excise Act was registered. Later, the accused was released on bail. TNS
Basmati rice stolen
Unknown persons have stolen around 19 bags of basmati rice, containing over six quintals of rice from the Rayya grain market. Complainant Gajjan Singh, who is also a commission agent, told the police that on Saturday, he and his workers went home and the next morning when he came to his shop, he found 19 bags missing. A case has been registered at the Beas police station in this regard. TNS
Chabal police book four
Tarn Taran: The Chabal police have booked four persons under Section 295 for violating the Sikh code of conduct (maryada) while performing akhand in Emma Kalan village. The accused had been identified as Amrik Singh, his son Manpreet Singh of Kala Afgana village, Kashmir Singh of Harshian village and Kulwinder Singh of Kalanaur village, all under Gurdaspur district. The accused were in the village to perform akhand path at the house of Dilbag Singh. Bhai Sarup Singh, the granthi of Gurdwara Beer Baba Budha Sahib, in his complaint to the Chabal police alleged that the accused Manpreet Singh had trimmed his beard and nor was he an amritdhari when he was performing the duties of a granthi. Bhai Sarup Singh said the accused had violated the code of conduct (maryada), hurting Sikh religious sentiments. None of the accused has been arrested so far. OC
