Rare coins on display at Art Gallery

AMRITSAR: An exhibition of the rarest of the rare coins and currency from sixth century BC onwards has been going on at the Art Gallery by the Indian Academy of Fine Arts, in collaboration with North Zone Culture Centre Patiala.

An exhibition of the rarest of the rare coins and currency from sixth century BC onwards has been going on at the Art Gallery by the Indian Academy of Fine Arts, in collaboration with North Zone Culture Centre Patiala. Inaugurated recently, it will conclude on June 25.

The exhibition is a maiden effort of the IAFA in the field and features punch mark coins from the era of Khushan dynasty, Indo-Sassanid period, Indo-Greek and Roman coins. Besides, it also features coins of the era of Mughal kings, including Akbar, Jahangir, Shah Jahan, Shah Alam, Aurangzeb, Farrukhsiyar, Alamgir, Ahmed Shah, Shah Alam II from 1525 AD to 1858 AD Sikh Misl coins and currency from Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s era was the special attraction.

The exhibition was curated by Dev Dard, who is a known collector and artist. “The antiques and rare coins with so much value will take you to the era of centuries ago. The exhibition gives a sneak peek into our history and is for the knowledge and awareness of our generation. Some of the coins have been sourced from various collectors, who procured them from excavations,” he said.

Jagmohan Singh, DCP, Amritsar, was the chief guest. He appreciated the display of rare currency and urged people to come and see our heritage.
