Amritsar, October 22

Rs 39 lakh in cash was stolen under mysterious circumstances from Bharti-Walmart store on the Amritsar-Jalandhar GT road here last night.

Conforming this, Rajneesh Kumar, vice-president and head, Corporate Affairs, Walmart India, said, “This is a serious matter and an FIR has been filed by the store with the local police station. The authorities are investigating and we are cooperating with them.”

Though circumstantial evidence pointed towards the involvement of an insider in the theft, police officials said they were still investigating the case. The police have taken around four persons, including the manager of the store and the security guards, who were present during the night shift, in custody.

The cash was kept in a safe. The safe requires a security code and a special key to open it. As there was no sign of any breakage of the safe, the police officials believe it was the handiwork of an insider who knew the security code. Interestingly, the CCTV cameras were also found to be switched off at the time when the theft took place, said Jasdeep Singh, SSP, Amritsar rural police.
