Safe driving, cleanliness among New Year resolutions of city residents

As the curtains draw on 2014 and we get ready to party our way into 2015, the one thing everyone would like to wake up to is to look at things differently. That’s where the New Year resolution works, or might work. For some, it’s just a word; others might show some determination to achieve it. From throwing away that pack of cigarettes to organising your wardrobe, New Year resolutions stand for a promise — to make things better in the year ahead. So, we ask local residents as to what their New Year resolution will be, not only for themselves but also for their beloved holy city.

With a hope to begin a promising year for Amritsar and its residents, here’s what most would liketo pledge for theupcoming year.

Stop littering

My resolution for the New Year would be to stop littering. I would not litter and try not to add to the city’s filth. I believe that Amritsar’s most troublesome issue will require a collective effort from its citizens. If all of us make a resolution to keep the city clean, we could achieve the target set by the Swachh Bharat movement.

Drive safe

Amritsar needs a lot of resolutions to become a better city and mine would be to drive safe. Driving on the city roads is nothing less than an adventure, considering the increased road rage and negligent drivers flouting traffic norms. We cannot blame the administration or law enforcement authorities for our own ignorance and a negligent attitude towards road safety. So, my resolution would be to practise and preach road safety and keep things under control behind the wheel.

Follow road safety rules

My resolution for 2015 will be to follow road safety rules and make an effort to keep public places clean. I would also like to make a request to fellow residents to join in with their resolutions and ensure that no damage to public property or environment is done in the coming year.

Abide by traffic norms

My New Year resolution for the city in 2015 would be to drive safe. The city has been on the edge with traffic problems and road safety issues and people do not make any effort to obey traffic rules while on road, especially youngsters. Everyday, newspapers are full of cases of negligent driving and road rage. I would like to take responsibility and pledge to drive safe, follow traffic rules and makea small, yet significantdifference.

Sensitise people to keep environment clean

My resolution for a better Amritsar would be to try and help out people and sensitise them towards keeping the environment clean. The city really needs a better attitude towards cleanliness and 2015 would make a good start if we all pledge to keep garbage disposal in check. The city is our home and it’s our responsibility to keep it clean, whether one has to hammer it down in the minds of residents or make a voluntary effort. I would like to stick to my resolution and spread a word or two about it as well.
